Custom Pool Construction: How To Get It Done
When it comes to building a custom pool, the most popular option is a concrete pool. The most common forms of concrete pools are actually known as gunite pools. These custom pools offer a wide range of design options and can be custom built to any shape or size. Here at Canyon Oak Pools, we use a dry mix gunite. The small particle dry mix is shot through a hose and at the point of application combines with water to create the concrete substance. Concrete pools last far longer than fiberglass or vinyl pools and require much less maintenance (although it does require a bit more expertise and skill to apply- but don’t worry, we’ve got that!)
So, what exactly goes into the construction process of a concrete pool? In this blog post, we'll take a closer look at the steps and phases involved in building a custom concrete pool.
Design and Planning
The first step in building a custom gunite concrete pool is to work with an experienced designer to create a design that fits your backyard and lifestyle. This includes taking into consideration the size and shape of your backyard, your desired features, and your budget. Once the design is finalized, the next step is to obtain all necessary permits and approvals.
Excavation
The next step is to excavate the area where the pool will be built. This includes digging out the actual area for the pool, as well as prepping any other areas that will be a part of the project, like decks.
Steel Rebar and Plumbing
Once the excavation is complete, steel rebar is placed inside the hole. This serves as the framework for the pool and provides strength and stability. The rebar is then tied together and bent to conform to the shape of the pool. Plumbing is also installed at this phase.
Gunite Application and CPSP
The next step is to apply gunite, which is a mixture of cement, sand, and water. This is applied behind, over, and around the steel rebar using a hose and is then troweled to create a smooth surface. This is the process that gives the pool its custom shape and strength. Once the concrete sets, the Concrete Pool Shell Protector (CPSP) is applied. This seal protects the gunite shell from the elements and prevents the bond from breaking down.
Tile, Coping, and Electrical
After the gunite has been applied, the electrical lines are installed. This includes wiring for lighting, and any other features you have selected. Watch your design really come to life as your beautiful tile and coping choices are completed.
Decking
A final step in the construction process is to add decking around the pool. This can include poured concrete, pavers, or natural stone. This step is important as it not only adds aesthetic appeal to the pool, but also provides a safe and practical area for lounging and entertaining.
Interior Finish (Pool Plaster)
Once all other construction phases are complete, the plaster is applied. There are a wide variety of choices and colors of plaster, with pebble finishes being one of the most popular. These interior finishes are used to protect the gunite, make the inside of the pool smooth, and give the pool it’s final custom appearance.
Water Filling and Initial Chemical Balance
After the plaster application is complete, the pool is filled with water and the initial chemical balance is established. This is an important step as it ensures that the water is safe for swimming and that the pool's filtration and heating systems are working properly.
Final Inspection
Before the pool is ready for use, a final inspection is conducted to ensure that everything is in working order and that all safety codes have been met. Leaving you with a beautiful new custom pool ready to enjoy.
